The FDA Did Something Right

You heard me....
The FDA actually did something right!

The Corn Refiners Association attempt to rename high fructose corn syrup to be just corn sugar has been rejected by the FDA.  Hurray!

"The FDA defines sugar as a solid, dried and crystalized food - not a syrup."

Additionally, the Corn Refiners Association has been trying to tell everyone that high fructose corn syrup is "actually a form of sugar and has the same nutritional value as table sugar."  The Sugar Association sued saying that sugar and corn syrup are not the same.

The Corn Refiners Association continues to claim that "the vast majority of American consumers are confused about high fructose corn syrup."

Um....I'm not confused at all.  I very rarely eat it because I have gotten the products that contain it out of my diet for the most part.

It's amazing how out of touch with reality the Corn Refiners Association is.  Perhaps they are run by ex-Monsanto employees?

Pinterest Try and Fail

Have you discovered pinterest?
I have!

I am trying to prepare more food ahead of time (when I get enough sleep) and pinterest has some good looking ideas.

First I tried to make banana peanut butter refrigerator oatmeal.
This is what I aspired to...

This is what my creation looked like...

I know I didn't use the same size jar, but I wouldn't think that would matter that much.  It tasted nasty.  Not even o.k., just plain nasty!

Next I tried mason jar salads.
This is what I aspired to...

This is what my creation looked like...

This was not a complete fail.  I did end up eating one of the jars of salad.  Problem was, no matter how hard I shook the jar, I couldn't get the dressing to coat the lettuce and carrots enough.  I ended up mixing it with a fork.

I will try a non-dairy salad dressing next time and I think it will work out better!

Make-Up

I don't wear make-up.

It is too much of a hassle.
I've never really cared to learn how to put it on correctly.
It almost always gives me a rash.

I can't even wear most lipstick or lip gloss because they make my lips swell.

Lou sent me an e-mail about this vegan cosmetics line being sold through Etsy. I'm not quite sure how yarn, fabric or make-up can be vegan, but the make-up doesn't have all the artificial crude in it that the big brands do.

You can try little samples of their products, which are powder based except for the lip stuff.  So I order a bunch of samples..... blush, foundation, cover up, eye shadow, and lip gloss.

This stuff rocks!  No irritations, no rash!  Love it!

Am I wearing make-up more because of it?  A little.

Most importantly is that I have finally found something that works with my sensitive skin!  Hurray!

Check it out for yourself!

Bee Collapse and Pesticide

"In two new studies published in the March 29th edition of Science" a type of pesticide called Neonicotinoids has been linked to the decline of bees all over the world.  The pesticide "appear to scramble bees' sense of direction, maing it hard for them to find home. Starved of foragers and the pollen they carry, colonies produce fewer queens, and eventually collapse."

Apparently the EPA's own internal reports showed that the studies that said Neonicotinoids were safe were "shoddy and unreliable."

Why are famers using this kind of a pesticide?  When you grow the same crop year after year and don't practice crop rotation you are more likely to get pest infestation.  This "safe" pesticide gets rid of the pests.

Why are we experimenting with pesticides?

Do they understand what would happen to a lot of the world's crops if all the bees died off?

Plastic Bags

Just another reminder of why fabric bags are better and safer than plastic bags...
